How Nurture a Young Musician

Our guest today is Mr. Paul Nickels, piano teacher extraordinaire based in Southern Utah! We discuss how to make music a part of your family's life and nurture your kids' growth as musicians. Some highlights of the episode:

  1. We are wired for music!
  2. Parents play a vital role in a child's musical development.
  3. We best learn music in community.
  4. Body balance is an important priority when making music.
  5. First learn notes, fingerings, rhythms (the what); then add nuances (the how) such as dynamics, phrasing, tone, articulation.

Some quotable quotes from Paul's studio:

"Whether you [stick with music] or not, your lessons will show up in the kind of person you become."

"Nothing works unless you do!"

"Trying until you get it right isn't enough...get it right until you can't get it wrong."

"Practice small things, slowly...Find the 'speed of success'."

The photo on the cover of the episode is Paul's young daughter Amy at the keyboard as a little girl. Message me if you'd like Mr. Nickels' contact info!

Join us for the upcoming (re)CONNECT moms' retreat Oct 24-26th in Southern Utah! We have a few spots left :)
